What is a County Legislator

Established in 1977. Similar to our federal government's 3 branches of power, the Legislators are the lawmakers of County government. More like the house of representatives, the legislators represent districts of approximate congruity rather than smaller political governments, like cities, towns and villages.

Nine members make up the legislature which meets as an entire body once a month, on the second Tuesday of the month. The Legislature votes to approve the County Executive's budget.

Is it wrong for a candidate to campaign in community parks?

No. In fact, according to the first amendment, campaigning falls under freedom of speech protection. And, since community parks are paid for by taxpayers, they are public property and are excluded from any protections of privacy.

Recently, the Supervisor of Carmel, Connie Munday, made a statement that campaigning is an invasion of peoples quiet time, and that our parks should be a refuge from such activities.

I couldn't disagree more. It is the duty of every candidate to avail themselves of any and all means to get their message out to the public. And any individual attempts to quell those messages, especially by an incumbent, should be censured.

The public has a right to know. And if the do not wish to hear it, they will say so or move away from the speaker or Vote against the Candidate.

Further, it is my understanding that there were candidates at ball fields gathering petition signatures. And, in fact, the Supervisor and/or her volunteers were on Library Property soliciting signatures for her own campaign petitions.

That is a prime example of hypocracy at it's worst. Shame on you, Madam Supervisor.

Why would a County Legislator get involved in local issues, like widening Route 6?

While it's often said that Route 6 is a "Town Problem" on a "State Road", there are 2 very good reasons why Tony Fusco would get involved.

First, it is one of the busiest East-West roads in the county. Without a parkway system, it is one of the prime routes connecting the Hudson River towns to the eastern parts of Putnam.

Second, the constituents that Tony serves, those living in District 9 of the County, are directly affected by the congestion, appearance and maintenance of Route 6. It should be a shining corridor through the Town of Carmel. Instead, it's been allowed to become the "Tobacco Road" of Mahopac.

What is the "Putnam Paradox"?

Simply put, the Putnam Paradox is a description of how Putnam residents spend their disposable income.

Every time a resident of Putnam County drives across the border into Connecticut , Westchester , Dutchess or other neighboring municipalities to shop, they take their sales tax dollars with them. So, instead of Putnam County receiving the sales tax collected on these items, other municipalities benefit from such purchases.

Can I Vote for Tony Fusco?

While it may not be possible for you to vote, due to your residence outside of Tony's District, his election to office will surely benefit every resident of Putnam County.

Is it "MAY-oh-pack" or "muh-HOE-pack"?

According to a search in Wikipedia.....

The proper pronunciation of the town's name is "muh-HOE-pack," however the mispronunciation "MAY-oh-pack" has become prevalent. A Town Board vote on the topic was taken on December 27, 1988 [1], and the vote split almost evenly. "MAY-oh-pack," although technically incorrect according to historians, is the more common pronunciation.
